Silver Polar Bears

I'm an undergrad at UC Santa Barbara majoring in literature in the College of Creative Studies. (And I have never loved school so much as I do now.)

I write, I read like it's going out of style, I go to class, I listen to music, I stumble through social stuff, I play soccer, and I dream about archery ranges within walking distance. C'est ma vie. :)

Playing the Tourist

My family came to visit me on Thursday, and this morning we all piled into the RAV-4 and drove up to Solvang.  (FYI: riding in the back of a RAV-4 is not as comfortable as one might think.)

Now, I’m from San Diego.  We complain about and make fun of tourists every year, practically all year round.  Not usually in any seriousness-it’s generally only when we end up behind somebody with out of state plates going particularly slow on the I-15.  But I always wonder what natives in other places say about their tourists, sometimes to the point where I get a pinch uncomfortable even when people are being really, really nice.

Everybody in Solvang that we met was really, really nice, though.  I let myself buy into the whole tourist-y bit today, and had a lot of fun.  We went to a Hans Christian Anderson museum, a motorcyle museum, an ice cream place, and then after dinner we came back to the hotel room and played Apples to Apples until Dane Cook showed up on Comedy Central.

Good times.  I haven’t gotten any writing done since my family came to visit, but this is the first time in just about forever that they all came to see me at once.  It’s been interesting to have both my parents and my little brother around all the time again.  Fun, even. :)
